Resources for congregations
No longer do I call you servants…
But I have called you friends!
-- John 15:15
Our partners in theological education
Seminaries don’t serve alone. You are an important part of the preparation
of leaders for the Lutheran Church. Students and teachers come from the church
for the church. Formation for ministry actually begins when members and leaders
of a congregation identify and lift up persons with gifts and skills who might
consider a vocation in the church.
Our Friends
Those who pray for, support and encourage seminary students, faculty
and staff are to us, “Friends of the Seminary.” Our “Friends” are
to be found among the members of the 1250 congregations of Region 8 and others
across the country in the ELCA. We hope that you are a “Friend of the
Seminary” in your congregation. If you aren’t now, please speak
to the “Friends” Coordinator of your congregation and become a
partner for your Seminary at Gettysburg.
Support Goes Directly to Students
“Friends of the Seminary” have raised more than $1 million in the
last 55 years to establish scholarships for deserving students and direct student
support. We say “thank you and thanks be to God.”
“Friends” has provided the initial funding for the seminary
chaplaincy and for counseling services. “Friends” underwrote
a portion of the townhouse for student families and most recently,
the Student Coffee Shop renovation. It takes a whole Church to raise
a new church leader. It takes tuition, scholarships, ELCA and synodical
giving, gifts to the annual fund and lots of endowment gifts. And
that doesn’t cover the seminarians’ food and books.
The financial support from the Friends of the Seminary Day in your
congregation directly assists students. Each gift helps us prepare
a leader who may be a future pastor, minister of music, Christian
educator, special servant or parish nurse in your congregation and
your synod.
