Did you know that many employers match gifts made to charitable organizations? When you or your spouse makes a gift to Gettysburg Seminary, your employer may make a contribution of equal value - doubling the size of your gift! Information is available from most human relations departments. You can also contact the Advancement Office for more information.

Launching in spring 2010, Thrivent Choice is a new giving program that lets members help choose where Thrivent Financial gives back. All benefit and associate members will be eligible to "vote" to distribute a portion of Thrivent Financial's charitable funds among a short list of national charities (Lutheran and non-Lutheran), one to two times per year. In addition, approximately 30% of benefit members will be able to direct Thrivent Choice Dollars to thousands of Lutheran nonprofit organizations, including Gettysburg Seminary. For more details, visit the Thrivent website at: https://www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice/
Gifts of stock and other securities
Gettysburg Seminary welcomes gifts of corporate stock and other securities. Donors often utilize appreciated stock to make major lifetime gifts to the Seminary, but many donors also recognize stock gifts as an efficient and tax-effective way to make annual gifts. For information on how to transfer securities to Gettysburg Seminary, contact the Advancement Office. Additional information is also available in the Fall 2008 edition of our Legacy newsletter
Planned gifts include a number of charitable giving methods through which you can make a contribution to Gettysburg Seminary while also assuring your personal and family financial goals are met. Planning a gift should be done in consultation with your family as well as a financial advisor. To learn more about planned gifts, click here
There are many ways to include Gettysburg Seminary in your estate plan, most commonly through some kind of bequest in your will. You can easily include Gettysburg Seminary in your estate plan by including the following or similar language in your will, "I give, devise, and bequeath to Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (a dollar amount or description of property or percentage of your estate) to be used for its (general or specific) purposes.” You may stipulate that your bequest be used for a specific purpose, such as student scholarships or faculty support; however, because educational activities and priorities change over time, you may wish to give the Seminary the flexibility to use the funds where they are most needed. For more information on estate giving, contact the Advancement Office.
In addition to your will, you may also name Gettysburg Seminary as the owner or beneficiary of certain assets, such as life insurance policies, bank account, revocable living trusts, and others. Charitable gift opportunities exist through those vehicles, and the tax advantages can be comparable to those available from a gift through your will. For more information on designating Gettysburg Seminary as a beneficiary, contact the Advancement Office or your financial advisor.
Retirement plan designation
Retirement funds held in IRAs, 401(k)s, or other qualified retirement plans offer a straightforward and tax-efficient way to make a generous gift to Gettysburg Seminary. If you have reached the age where you are eligible or required to take distributions, and those distributions exceed your current income needs, a gift of the excess income to Gettysburg Seminary can help to offset your tax liability while providing support to the Seminary. Another option is to name Gettysburg Seminary as a remainder beneficiary of your retirement plan. To make a charitable gift with a retirement plan, contact the administrator of your retirement plan to request a new beneficiary-designation form. You may direct that Gettysburg Seminary receive all or a portion of the asset by simply adding “Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg” to the form and signing your name. By doing so, all taxation is avoided and the full amount supports Gettysburg Seminary. For more information on designating Gettysburg Seminary as a beneficiary, contact the Advancement Office or your financial advisor.
