The Gettysburg College Symphony Orchestra will present Masterworks for Organ and Orchestra with the world-renowned Felix Hell as soloist in this program that brings together the passion of a symphony orchestra with the power of the organ. The program includes Camille Saint-Saens' popular Symphony No. 3, "Organ," and Poulenc's Organ Concerto. The evening opens with a moving work for strings alone, Avner Dorman's Chorale.
The soloist, German concert organist Felix Hell, is a phenomenon in several ways. Hailed as the "most well-known young concert organist worldwide" (Dr. John Weaver), and "undoubtedly one of the major talents of the century" (Dr. Frederick Swann, AGO president), he "sets standards that many established and honored older players would struggle to equal" (Michael Barone in "The American Organist").
The Gettysburg College Symphony Orchestra forms the core of the orchestral program at the Sunderman Conservatory at Gettysburg College. Under the direction of Alexander Kahn, the orchestra performs a wide variety of works that reflect both the rigorous performance standards at the Sunderman Conservatory and the orchestra's place within the broader liberal arts community of Gettysburg College.
Contrary to normal Music, Gettysburg! concerts, this event will require admission by ticket. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. Children and those with a Gettysburg College or Seminary ID card are admitted free. For more information please contact the Sunderman Conservatory Office at 717-337-6815.
