GETTYSBURG SEMINARY TO HOST ODYSSEY NETWORK’S ON SCRIPTURE CONTINUING EDUCATION EVENT
Gettysburg Seminary an inaugural partner with Odyssey Networks in ON Scripture
Weekly lectionary column to be featured in the Huffington Post Religion page
Gettysburg Seminary announced this week that it will be joining forces with Odyssey Networks in Manhattan, NY, in its launch of a new weekly online resource featuring interpretations of scripture in light of current issues.
Professor Mark Vitalis Hoffman, Associate Professor of Biblical Studies, will be the featured writer this week with commentary to appear on Wednesday at www.odysseynetworks.org, www.huffingtonpost.org/religion, and http://day1.org/. Gettysburg Seminary Professor Susan Hedahl will be contributing later this year.
“At a time when the public needs deeper understanding of the Bible, of theology and religion more than ever “ said Michael Cooper-White, seminary president, “Gettysburg Seminary is eager to share its resources and theological insight in new circles, made possible by Odyssey Networks and the Huffington
Post.”
On Thursday, September 15, Gettysburg will host the first ON Scripture continuing education event. Hoffman will be joined by three members of the ON Scripture editorial team: Professor Eric Barreto, Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN; TextWeek Editor Jenee Woodard, Jackson, MI, and Pastor Mary Brown, Odyssey Networks, Manhattan, NY. The all-day session, called Preaching Perspectives, will focus on the lectionary texts for Proper 21 through Proper 27/Christ the King Sunday. To register, find information at www.ltsg.edu/Lifelong-Learners/Preaching-Perspectives.
Odyssey's Executive Vice President, Pastor Eric Shafer, shares: "Our partnership with Gettysburg is a natural one for Odyssey. With the seminary's theological expertise and Odyssey's focus on current and topical interfaith news, we are excited to use ON Scripture as a way to help both clergy and laypeople dig deep into the Scripture and make timely connections with the topical news of our day."
This Preaching Perspectives event, entitled “Tying the Bible Text to Current Events Through Exegesis and Interpretation” is designed to provide pastoral preachers with creative tools and insights as they respond to the fresh demands of daily life and its encounter with the scriptural texts they use each week. Gettysburg Seminary has offered the program for 16 years. ON Scripture will partner with Gettysburg Seminary on two of the four scheduled events, September 15, 2011 and January 26th, 2012.
