Proclaiming Liberty: The Unfinished Work of Freedom, Faith, and Living in a Fallen World
- Newly Designed for Rostered Leaders and Groups of Lay Persons from Congregations
- April 15-20
Gettysburg Seminary is expanding its traditional Spring Convocation into a weeklong feast of lectures, presentations and workshops, with worship, cultural and spiritually enriching activities for students, lay learners, alumni/ae, prospective seminarians and more.
The April 15-20, 2013 event, entitled the Gettysburg Spring Academy, includes nationally known historian Allen Guelzo and Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) chief executive Linda Hartke who join Gettysburg faculty presenters in an array of presentations Monday through Saturday.
Prompted by a preview visit introducing the new Seminary Ridge Museum, the week features Guelzo’s presentation: Divided Understandings of Liberty, Hartke’s Fulfilling the Promise of Freedom, Nelson Strobert on Daniel A. Payne: Freedom at Home and Abroad, Maria Erling on What We Don’t Talk About: The Lutheran Debates on Slavery, Kristin Largen’s Freedom From and Freedom For, Leonard Hummel on Drums Beating Where the Scholar is Studying and much more. Music, Gettysburg! will present Song and Dance featuring Civil War music by the band “Dearest Home” and an introduction to 19th century social dance by Briant Bohleke.
As a part of this special week, the Seminary will be offering a 1.5 credit course Proclaim Liberty, an intensive experience that focuses on the diverse and conflicting understandings of liberty and freedom, not simply in the 19th century but in the present as well. The course integrates and includes all the presentations.
Take advantage of this opportunity to be in conversation with scholars, seekers, lifelong learners and seminarians for audit, course credit, and/or personal enrichment. A low fee structure makes the week accessible to all and especially favorable to congregational groups of six or more people.
