Requirements for Admission and Application Process
for the Master of Divinity Program

General Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree, or its equivalent from an accredited college or university
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.7 of higher on a scale of 4.0 (however, the admissions committee does consider factors other than academic record)
  • English language proficiency
    • Applicants whose language of origin is not English and/or have not had previous instruction in English must provide evidence of competence in English, which may include taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Written English (TWE), both administered by the Educational Testing Service and regularly at many centers throughout the world.

Needed Application Materials

  • Completed Application
  • $35 Application Fee
  • Transcripts - official transcripts from all colleges or universities where you completed undergraduate or graduate work
  • Recommendations - three total recommendations from:
    • Your pastor, or campus pastor if you have been away at school
    • A professor, or professional colleague if you have been out of school for an extended period of time
    • A non-relative lay person who knows you as a leader
  • Autobiography - An essay of approximately 1200 words that describes:
    • The significant events in your life, your Christian experience, your relationship to the church
    • An assessment of your strengths and weaknesses as a candidate for a church career
    • Why you decided to attend Seminary

Candidates for rostered ministry in the ELCA, or other denominations, are encouraged to submit their candidacy entrance essay in lieu of the above.

Candidacy

  • ELCA  Applicants to the MDiv program normally must have a Positive Entrance from their Candidacy Committee prior to being offered admission. The Seminary's Faculty Admissions Committee may offer provisional admission pending written notification of the applicant's positive entrance into ELCA candidacy.
  • Applicants from other denominations who are preparing for church service should register with their denominational judicatory and have their judicatory submit written notification of this registration.

Note: Applications and supporting material must be received by February 15 for full consideration of seminary funded scholarships.  Applications received after this date  are still eligible for financial aid and scholarship.
