On the Road to Chaplaincy!
Student Profile by Molly Imler
Thomas Webb
Church: Calvary Victory Church, Harrisburg, PA
Undergraduate: B.A. in Management of Human Resources
Thomas A. Webb, a non-denominational 2nd year student earning a Master of Divinity degree, has recently sensed the call of God to re-enter the U.S. Air Force, only this time he will be filling the role of military chaplain. Mr. Webb joined the U.S. Air Force to help complete his bachelor’s degree and remained enlisted for eight years in the fields of Logistics and Military Training. After completing his service and earning a Master of Science degree in Ministerial Leadership from Southern Christian University in Alabama, Mr. Webb became the pastor of Calvary Victory Church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Though Mr. Webb serves his congregation with the utmost diligence and integrity, recommendations from former fellow military officers and a calling from God led him back to the U.S. Air Force.
So even though his service was complete, his connection to the U.S. Air Force was just beginning. In fact, he took his oath of office as a Chaplain Candidate on December 23, 2005 currently placing him in the Chaplain Candidate Program of the U.S. Air Force reserve. After strong suggestion from the U.S. Air Force Chaplaincy, Mr. Webb decided to come to Gettysburg Seminary to earn a Master of Divinity degree in preparation for his future service as a chaplain. LTSG offers a learning environment in which Mr. Webb can learn new skills and enhance the skills he has already acquired to better serve the Air force, his fellow man and his country.
After attending Seminary for several months, Mr. Webb describes his experiences as very comfortable and enlightening. “It is encouraging to come to a seminary where the learning environment is mentally inspiring and at times challenging, in a good sense,” he elaborates. Mr. Webb delineates his experiences with the professors, the support staff and his fellow students depicting the professors as extremely knowledgeable, the support staff as a blessing and his fellow students as willing advisors to how life unfolds and takes shape at LTSG. “The professors have gone the extra mile,” he explains, “to ensure that I understand the subject material, not only to do well on tests, but for me to become more well-rounded as a minister of the gospel and as a future Chaplain.”
At 34 years old, Mr. Webb is now balancing family, a full time job as pastor of his church and seminary studies. He explains his gratitude and appreciation to the seminary community in their understanding of the challenges he undergoes in this balancing act. “The seminary is very understanding of students such as myself who have the challenge of balancing family, being a full time pastor and taking on seminary studies.”
The seminary has provided a way for Mr. Webb to enhance himself as he moves through the progression of life. The experiences and skills he has acquired at LTSG will provide Mr. Webb with integrity, as well as enhance his future as a pastor, a chaplain and a well rounded individual. |
