Welcome to our Gettysburg Seminary web page!
Likely you have landed here because you’re interested in the Church, and perhaps considering
becoming a pastor or other church worker, or supporting theological
education in some way. Whatever may be your reason, we’re glad
you found us and are eager to tell you more about this great institution
of worship, learning and service.
The word “seminary” means a place where seeds are planted,
nurtured and continue growing. The seeds we hope to plant here are
seeds of hope germinated in the promises of God who became a human
being in Jesus. Here we seek to be faithful teachers and learners
who grow more fully day by day into our Christian faith. That faith
leads us to lives of service. While we are a professional school
of graduate-level academic study, the Seminary is also far more.
We are a place where the deepest meanings of life can be explored;
where the profound truths of the ages are reexamined in light of
contemporary culture; where doubt is honored and faith kindled; where
sacrificial service to “the least of these” transcends
self-serving attitudes and actions. We seek women and men of courage,
of dedication and commitment to join the saints of the ages who have
given themselves over to God’s call upon their lives.
There are hundreds of seminaries in the
U.S. and throughout the world. If you hear a “call” and
choose to attend a seminary, we want you to discover the one
that’s best for you. We who study, teach and serve at
Gettysburg think our community is a very special place. Gettysburg
is the oldest and most historic Lutheran seminary in the western
hemisphere. Its prominent role in the history of the Civil
War’s most famous battle renders it sacred ground for
millions of pilgrims who have visited Seminary Ridge. Even
as we honor our history, however, we are forward-looking and
seek to understand our place in a post-modern world. |

By means of on-campus offerings amidst the rolling hills of Central
Pennsylvania and through our satellite program in Washington, D.C.,
we offer a unique blend of rural and urban studies, coupled with
the unparalleled opportunity to study the intersection of faith
and the political world of rural America and of our urban national
capital area.
By browsing this web site, by studying our
printed materials and catalogue, you can learn a great deal more
about the Lutheran Theological
Seminary at Gettysburg. But the best way to come to know us is
to visit our campus, meet some of our students and faculty, walk
this holy ground in this historic and contemporary “school
for the prophets.” Whether you come to stay as a student
or will be only a one-time visitor, we hope you will come to Gettysburg.
We think you will find your life enriched, your spirit lifted,
your sights raised to higher, holy things by your visit!

Rev. Michael L. Cooper-White, President
