David Rhoads, '66, made news recently with
an award from Fortress Press for graduate and seminary teaching. The
following news release was published by the Lutheran School of
Theology at Chicago.
Rhoads Receives 2004 Fortress Award for Graduate and Seminary
Teaching
Chicago, Ill. – David Rhoads, Professor
of New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago
received the first
2004 Fortress Press Award for Graduate and Seminary Teaching at
the American Association of Religion/Society of Biblical Literature
annual conference in San Antonio, Texas on November 21, 2004.
The award
is given for innovative teaching. Rhoads was chosen for the
award for incorporating oral performance of scripture in his
teaching,
for the development of diverse methodologies for studying the
Bible, the use of teaching methods that foster a diverse cultural
interpretation
of the Bible, and for empowering leadership on issues related
to the environment.
Rhoads’ latest book is Reading Mark: Engaging the Gospel
published in 2004 by Fortress Press. He is the author of Mark
as Story and The Challenge of Diversity:
The Witness of Paul and the Gospels and is co-editor of Characterization
in the Gospels: Rethinking Narrative Criticism. Rhoads directs
the web site, Web of
Creation, www.webofcreation.org,
which provides ecumenical educational and worship environmental resources for
congregations. Rhoads is an accomplished oral interpreter
of Biblical writings including Gospel of Mark, the Letter to the Galatians,
I Peter, and Revelation. He joined the LSTC faculty in 1988 and holds degrees
from
Gettysburg College, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg,
Oxford University and Duke University.
