The Summer Institute for Ministry brings together pastors and other rostered leaders for a week of in-depth continuing education. The topics and focus vary from year to year. Participants enjoy the seminary ammenities of structured study, free time, recreation, food and fellowship and library resources through the week.
At the 2008 Summer Institute for Ministry nationally know authors Roy Oswald, Robert Bacher, and Michael Cooper-White will explore themes of leadership and balance and in developing a practical theology of administration. |

Our Presenters
The Rev. Roy M. Oswald, author, seminary leader, and consultant, has provided leadership for hundreds of conferences and training events in the U.S. and Canada. A variety of denominations have called on him to focus on the pastoral role and the dynamics of parish leadership. Oswald served as Senior Consultant with the Alban Institute for 31 years, and now continues his ministry as a free-lance consultant. His books include Clergy Self-Care: Finding a Balance for Effective Ministry, Personality Type and Religious Leadership and The Inviting Church. His areas of expertise include emotional intelligence and leadership, healthy clergy transitions, and leadership in longer pastorates.
The Rev. Dr. Robert N. Bacher is formerly assistant to the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, where he was chief administrator of the churchwide organization, and is coauthor with Ken Inskeep of Chasing Down a Rumor. With a doctorate in public administration, Bacher has served as a parish pastor in Colorado, developing a new parish there, headed leadership training in the LCA Youth Office, and then led research, planning, and budgeting in the Division for Parish Services, where he also served as Executive Director. With Michael Cooper-White he co-authored Church Administration.
The Rev. Michael L. Cooper-White is president of Gettysburg Seminary and author of On a Wing and a Prayer: Faithful Leadership for the 21st Century. Ordained in the ELCA, his past service includes inner-city ministry in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area, chaplaincy, synodical and national denominational administration, and involvement in public policy. As Director of the ELCA Department for Synodical Relations, he served as chief staff person for the Conference of Bishops and as a consultant to leaders throughout the church. Fluent in Spanish, he has been a consultant in the development of Hispanic and bilingual outreach ministries. At Gettysburg he teaches the course "Church Administration, Leadership and Polity."
